With my own two hands

"The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new."- Socrates

Creativity is one of the great sources of energy and passion in life.  To create is to be engaged.  You are not simply consuming, or watching.  Creativity can come in many shapes- making a meal, knitting a sock, drawing, planting some flowers, even making a Halloween costume....What fun!  It can also teach us about a craft, which I think is really important in a time when so much comes to us mass produced by machines.

"....that making something, and using your own skill and the materials at hand, can teach a person not just about skills and techniques but also about patience, about our interconnectedness and about the true value of the resources that we often take for granted." Nancy Turner, Earth's Blanket

I have a net that I made for university project out of nettle fibre.  It was a really long process to harvest the nettles, dry them, separate the strands, weave the strands into larger string and then make a semblance of a net.  Honestly, it is not even close to functional because the holes in the net are so large... but it is something I still hold onto to this day.

What would our lives look like if we really understood the skills and resources that go into our stuff?  If we took the time to create for our communities? If we supported the businesses and people who make local goods that are sustainably harvested, durable, repairable and beautiful? If we became more creatively engaged?

"Imagine all the people, living for today ." John Lennon

You may say I'm a dreamer...
